The white-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus townsendii) is a member of the order Lagomorpha and the family Leporidae. As a large herbivorous mammal, it primarily inhabits open grasslands and prairie regions, frequently encroaching upon agricultural lands where it finds abundant food sources that make it a significant agricultural pest.

These animals cause substantial damage to a wide range of cultivated crops. Primary targets include winter wheat, barley, alfalfa, and various vegetable crops. Because they are active year-round and do not hibernate, they pose a constant threat to newly emerged seedlings in the spring and to winter cover crops, often necessitating extensive field re-sowing.

The biology of Lepus townsendii is characterized by high reproductive rates, with females producing multiple litters annually. Their movement patterns are highly opportunistic; they follow crop cycles to ensure consistent feeding. They are primarily crepuscular or nocturnal, which allows them to feed in fields undetected during the critical growth phases of various plants.

The damage caused by jackrabbits is easily identifiable by the slanted, clean cuts on stems and leaves, distinct from the shredded appearance left by insects or rodents. In addition to direct biomass consumption, they damage the structural integrity of crops and can cause significant economic losses in regions where their populations reach high densities.

Management and control strategies involve a multi-faceted approach. Exclusion is the most effective method for high-value crops, using wire fences or mesh barriers. Chemical repellents applied to foliage can deter feeding in larger field settings. Additionally, habitat modification, such as removing tall weeds or brush near field margins, reduces the protective cover that jackrabbits use to infiltrate agricultural zones.
