The European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) belongs to the order Lagomorpha and the family Leporidae. These mammals are notorious for their colonial social structure and burrowing behavior. In agriculture, they are considered a major pest due to their ability to consume vast amounts of green vegetation and their tendency to expand rapidly into new territories.

These pests target a wide range of agricultural crops, including winter cereals, legumes, and various cruciferous vegetables. They are particularly detrimental to young orchards, where they strip the bark from saplings, often ringing the trunk and leading to the eventual death of the tree. Their feeding habits can result in total crop failure if left unmanaged.

The biological success of the European rabbit stems from its high reproductive capacity. Females are capable of producing multiple litters annually, and the offspring reach sexual maturity within months. This high turnover rate means that populations can rebound quickly even after significant reduction efforts, posing a persistent threat to agricultural stability.

Damage assessment typically reveals clear-cut stems and gnawed bark at the base of plants. Beyond direct consumption, rabbits contribute to soil degradation through their extensive burrowing networks, which can compromise the integrity of field surfaces and irrigation infrastructure. Their presence often forces farmers to invest heavily in protective fencing and deterrents.

Integrated pest management strategies for rabbits include:

• Physical exclusion using high-tensile wire mesh fencing installed at least 30 cm underground.
• Applying commercial taste or scent-based deterrents to protect vulnerable saplings and row crops.
• Strategic habitat modification to reduce areas suitable for burrowing near cultivated fields.
• Deployment of motion-activated sonic or visual deterrents to disrupt rabbit activity patterns.
• Collaboration with local wildlife agencies for professional trapping or culling programs.
