Systematic position: The European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) belongs to the order Lagomorpha and the family Leporidae. As the sole member of the genus Oryctolagus, it is highly adaptable and has established itself as one of the most destructive agricultural pests globally, particularly in areas where it was introduced outside its natural range.

Crops affected: This species is a generalist herbivore. It frequently grazes on cereal crops, pulses, and oilseeds, often destroying young shoots before they can establish. In horticulture and forestry, rabbits represent a severe threat to young orchards and tree nurseries, as they feed on bark, causing severe damage to the vascular system of young trees and saplings.

Biology and life cycle: The biological success of the European rabbit is driven by its high reproductive rate. They are capable of breeding throughout most of the year, with females producing multiple litters per season. With a gestation period of about 30 days and early maturation of offspring, a small initial population can expand into a massive infestation within a few months under optimal environmental conditions.

Nature of damage and economic importance: Economic losses occur due to direct consumption of foliage and bark, which significantly reduces crop yields. High-density populations lead to soil degradation due to burrowing activities and increased risk of disease transmission among crops.
