African eggplant moth

Systematic position: Leucinodes africensis is a species of moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that has historically been confused with Leucinodes orbonalis, but molecular identification has confirmed it as a distinct species predominant in African regions.

Host plants: The primary host of this moth is the eggplant (Solanum melongena). However, it is a polyphagous pest within the Solanaceae family, capable of infesting tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and various wild species of Solanum, which often act as perennial reservoirs for the moth population.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The female moth lays eggs on buds and tender leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately tunnel into the fruit or stems. This internal feeding behavior protects them from predators and many conventional contact insecticides throughout their development.

Damage and pest status: The damage is characterized by boreholes in fruits, which are often filled with larval excrement. This renders the fruit unmarketable and susceptible to fruit rot. Larvae also tunnel through shoots, causing wilting, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the death of the entire plant, leading to significant yield losses.

Control measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Leucinodes africensis:

• Sanitation: Promptly removing and destroying infested plant parts to reduce the larval population.
• Monitoring: Deploying pheromone traps to track flight activity and determine optimal timing for pesticide application.
• Biological control: Introducing natural enemies, such as parasitic wasps, and using Bacillus thuringiensis sprays.
• Cultural practices: Crop rotation and maintaining clean field borders free of wild solanaceous weeds.
