Ethiopian fruit borer

The Ethiopian fruit borer (Leucinodes ethiopica) is a destructive agricultural pest belonging to the Crambidae family of the order Lepidoptera. Similar in its economic impact to other fruit-boring moths, this species is specialized in attacking solanaceous plants, posing a constant threat to vegetable production in various regions where environmental conditions favor its development.

This pest primarily affects crops such as tomatoes, eggplants, and various peppers. The larvae are the main destructive stage, as they burrow deep into the fruit shortly after hatching. This tunneling behavior renders the fruit inedible and often causes premature fruit drop, leading to significant yield losses for growers who fail to implement proactive monitoring measures.

The life cycle of Leucinodes ethiopica consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs near the calyx of the fruit. Upon hatching, the larvae quickly penetrate the fruit tissue, feeding internally for several weeks. Once development is complete, the larvae drop to the ground or seek sheltered areas in plant debris to form pupae, often protected by a silken cocoon.

The damage caused is characterized by internal rot and the presence of frass (excrement) around entry holes. Because the larvae remain shielded inside the fruit throughout their growth, traditional spray applications of contact insecticides often yield poor results. Farmers often observe healthy-looking fruit that, upon closer inspection, contains severe internal damage, making it a difficult pest to manage.

Control strategies should focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices to minimize reliance on broad-spectrum chemicals. Recommended actions include the use of pheromone traps for adult monitoring, strict sanitation practices such as the removal and deep burial of infested fruits, and the application of biological agents like Bacillus thuringiensis. Crop rotation and maintaining weed-free fields also help to reduce the population density of the pest between growing seasons.
