Malawi fruit borer

The Malawi fruit borer (Leucinodes malawiensis) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. This moth species is primarily known for causing damage to high-value vegetable crops, particularly in regions where it has established as a serious threat to food security.

The pest specifically targets members of the Solanaceae family. Eggplants (aubergines), tomatoes, and various peppers are the most susceptible crops. Because of its biology, the insect thrives in warm climates, allowing for continuous reproductive cycles throughout the growing season of these vegetables.

The life cycle consists of the egg, larval (caterpillar), pupal, and adult stages. The female moth deposits eggs on the flower buds or young fruit. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the fruit tissue, which effectively protects them from the external environment and many conventional pesticides for most of their larval stage.

Damage caused by this pest is primarily internal. The larvae consume seeds and internal flesh, making the fruit completely unmarketable and susceptible to rot. This feeding behavior often leads to significant yield losses, as the boreholes serve as entry points for pathogens, causing rapid decay of the infested crops.

Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach:

• Deployment of pheromone traps to monitor adult populations and determine optimal timing for interventions.
• Strict field sanitation, involving the regular collection and deep burial or destruction of infested fruits.
• Use of biological control agents, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, applied during early larval instars.
• Targeted application of systemic insecticides that can penetrate plant tissue to reach larvae inside the fruit.
