Ugandan eggplant borer

Leucinodes ugandensis is a destructive moth species belonging to the family Crambidae. Previously misidentified as its close relative Leucinodes orbonalis, it was formally described as a distinct species due to significant differences in morphology and DNA. This insect is primarily recognized as a serious threat to vegetable production in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly affecting solanaceous crops.

The primary host range includes economically important plants from the Solanaceae family. Eggplants are the most susceptible, followed by tomatoes and several wild species within the Solanum genus. Because the larvae feed internally within the fruits, the pest is difficult to detect during the early stages of infestation, leading to significant yield losses before the damage becomes externally visible.

The life cycle begins with the adult moth depositing eggs on the calyx or the surface of developing fruits. Once the larvae hatch, they bore directly into the fruit tissue, feeding on the pulp and seeds. The larval stage consists of several instars, which are completed inside the fruit. Pupation typically occurs in a tough, silken cocoon either on the fruit surface or in the soil near the base of the plant.

Damage caused by this borer is characterized by entry holes on the fruit surface, often accompanied by frass accumulation. These openings serve as entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens, which rapidly cause the fruit to rot. In high-infestation scenarios, the presence of the larvae can render an entire harvest commercially unviable, leading to severe economic consequences for growers.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this species:

• Deployment of pheromone traps to monitor adult population levels and determine application timing.
• Strict sanitation practices, including the collection and destruction of infested fruits to reduce future generations.
• Use of biological control agents, such as Bacillus thuringiensis sprays during the egg-laying phase.
• Implementation of crop rotation and the removal of alternative wild Solanum hosts near the production area.
• Selective use of systemic insecticides, ensuring compliance with pre-harvest intervals to ensure food safety.
