The Limacus genus belongs to the family Limacidae within the order Stylommatophora. These terrestrial gastropods are characterized by a soft, elongated body without an external shell, relying on a protective layer of mucus. They are nocturnal and highly moisture-dependent, thriving in gardens, greenhouses, and fields with high humidity levels.
Limacus slugs are generalist feeders and represent a significant threat to a wide range of horticultural and agricultural crops. They are particularly fond of leafy vegetables, such as lettuce and cabbage, as well as soft fruits like strawberries. They can also cause severe damage to seedlings, which are often consumed entirely, leading to poor crop establishment.
The lifecycle of these slugs involves egg deposition in moist soil or organic matter. Eggs are laid in clusters and hatch into juvenile slugs that resemble miniature adults. Development is temperature and humidity-dependent, allowing for rapid population growth during rainy seasons. These pests can survive winter in sheltered, frost-free environments as eggs or adults.
The damage caused by Limacus slugs is easily identified by irregular holes eaten into leaves, stems, and fruits. They also leave behind characteristic silvery mucus trails, which degrade the market quality of the harvest. Beyond physical consumption, their feeding often facilitates the entry of plant pathogens, leading to bacterial and fungal rot.
