Slug

Slugs (genus Limax) are shell-less gastropod mollusks belonging to the family Limacidae. They are notorious pests in both home gardens and commercial agriculture. Due to their soft bodies, they are extremely sensitive to desiccation and rely on high humidity levels to survive, which is why they are most active during the night or in overcast, wet weather conditions.

Slugs are opportunistic polyphagous feeders, meaning they consume a wide range of plant materials. They frequently attack leafy greens like lettuce and cabbage, strawberries, cucumbers, and even young potato tubers. By feeding on seedlings and tender plant tissue, they can significantly reduce crop density and lead to total failure in susceptible vegetable patches or greenhouse environments.

The biology of slugs is characterized by a rapid reproductive cycle. Being hermaphrodites, every individual is capable of laying eggs, which are typically deposited in clusters in cool, moist soil or under organic debris. The eggs hatch into small juveniles that resemble the adults. Depending on the environmental temperature and humidity, they can complete their life cycle relatively quickly, leading to multiple generations during a single growing season.

Damage caused by slugs is easily identifiable by irregular, ragged holes in foliage and scooped-out cavities in fruits. A key diagnostic feature is the trail of dried mucus left on the surfaces of leaves and stems. Beyond physical damage, their presence often introduces secondary infections, as the wounds caused by their rasping mouthparts (radula) provide easy access for bacteria and fungal pathogens, leading to crop rot.

Effective slug management requires a multi-faceted strategy. Cultural practices such as removing garden debris, keeping the soil surface dry through proper spacing, and regular cultivation of the soil can destroy their hiding spots and eggs. Barriers like copper tape or crushed eggshells can provide some relief. For larger infestations, chemical control using molluscicides, such as those containing iron phosphate, is highly recommended as a more environmentally sensitive option compared to older toxic bait formulations.
