Ash-black slug

Limax cinereoniger

Description

The Ash-black slug (Limax cinereoniger) belongs to the order Stylommatophora and the family Limacidae. It is recognized as one of the largest terrestrial slugs found in European forests and agricultural landscapes, characterized by its significant size and a distinctive longitudinal ridge on its back, though it often lacks the typical bright colors of other species.

This pest is a generalist feeder and poses a threat to numerous horticultural and field crops. It specifically targets high-moisture vegetables such as lettuce, cabbages, and cruciferous plants. Furthermore, soft fruits and root crops left near the soil surface are highly susceptible to feeding damage, which can lead to rapid deterioration of the produce.

The biological development of this species is heavily dependent on moisture and moderate temperatures. As a hermaphroditic mollusc, it lays batches of eggs in moist soil crevices or under decaying organic debris. The pest prefers nocturnal activity, hiding during the day in cool, dark environments, which makes monitoring and manual control challenging for farmers.

The damage caused by the Ash-black slug is quite severe, involving large, ragged holes in leaves and deep lesions in stems and fruits. Because of their voracious appetite, a large population can devastate a seedling crop overnight. Additionally, their mucous secretions leave behind trails that contaminate produce and facilitate the entry of plant pathogens, worsening the overall damage.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential for reducing the impact of these molluscs:

  • Maintaining proper field hygiene by removing debris and weeds to eliminate shelters.
  • Implementing irrigation management to avoid creating overly moist zones near sensitive plants.
  • Setting up physical barriers like copper tape or diatomaceous earth around vulnerable crops.
  • Applying granular molluscicides containing iron phosphate, which is safer for the environment than traditional chemical alternatives.
