Great grey slug

Limax maximus

Description

The Great grey slug (Limax maximus) belongs to the phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, order Stylommatophora, and family Limacidae. It is recognized as one of the largest terrestrial slugs, often reaching lengths of 15 to 20 centimeters. The species is characterized by its mottled grey or brownish body, typically displaying a pattern of dark spots or longitudinal stripes on its mantle.

This species acts as a significant polyphagous pest, causing substantial damage to a wide variety of cultivated plants. It frequently attacks leafy vegetables such as lettuce and cabbage, root vegetables, potatoes, and tomatoes. Furthermore, it poses a severe threat to ornamental gardens and fruit crops, particularly strawberries, as it prefers soft, nutrient-rich plant tissues.

The biology of Limax maximus is highly dependent on humidity levels. As nocturnal creatures, they spend their days in dark, damp environments such as beneath garden debris, stones, or thick mulch layers. Being hermaphroditic, they demonstrate high reproductive potential, laying hundreds of eggs in soil cavities. Under optimal moisture conditions, these hatch into juvenile slugs that begin feeding immediately, growing rapidly throughout the season.

The damage caused by these slugs is marked by large, irregular holes in leaves and fruits, often leading to total crop loss in severe infestations. As they feed, they leave behind characteristic silvery mucus trails. These trails, combined with the open lesions left on the plant surface, create ideal conditions for the secondary development of fungal and bacterial rots, further degrading the quality of the produce.

An effective management strategy for Limax maximus involves a combination of cultural and chemical approaches:

  • Sanitation, including the removal of weeds and debris that serve as daytime shelters.
  • Physical barriers such as copper tape, ash, or abrasive barriers to restrict movement.
  • Enhancing the presence of natural predators like hedgehogs, toads, and ground beetles.
  • Use of beer traps or other attractants to manually collect and remove slugs.
  • Application of certified molluscicides based on iron phosphate to target populations in high-pressure zones.
