Argentine ant

The Argentine ant (Linepithema humile) is a highly invasive ant species within the order Hymenoptera and the family Formicidae. Originating from South America, it has spread globally, creating massive interconnected supercolonies that disrupt local ecosystems and pose a significant challenge to farmers and orchard managers.

This pest affects a diverse range of crops, including citrus groves, vineyards, and various fruit trees. While they do not consume plant tissue directly, their impact is indirect but severe. They act as protective tenders for sap-sucking insects like aphids, mealybugs, and scale insects, which are major agricultural pests in their own right.

The biology of Linepithema humile is marked by polygyny, meaning colonies contain multiple queens, making them exceptionally resilient and difficult to eradicate. They exhibit aggressive behavior toward native ant species and can quickly dominate an area, establishing complex trails that link their nests to food sources on plants.

The damage caused is primarily attributed to their mutualistic relationship with honeydew-producing insects. By protecting aphids and scales from natural predators like ladybugs, the ants facilitate population explosions of these pests. This leads to heavy sap loss, stunted plant growth, and the development of sooty mold, which severely reduces the yield and marketability of crops.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy focused on exclusion and population reduction:

• Applying sticky barriers to tree trunks to prevent ants from accessing the canopy.
• Controlling aphid and scale populations using targeted systemic insecticides or biological agents.
• Utilizing slow-acting bait stations that allow workers to carry toxicant back to the nest to eliminate queens.
• Maintaining clean orchard environments by pruning foliage that touches the ground, which acts as a bridge for ants.
