The western velvet ant (Liometopum occidentale) is a member of the Hymenoptera order and the Formicidae family. Despite the common name, it is a specialized ant species found predominantly in Western North America, known for its complex social behavior and its significant role in protecting and fostering populations of sap-sucking insects in various plant ecosystems.
This pest affects a wide range of plants, including oak trees, citrus orchards, nut trees, and various ornamental shrubs. The ants typically nest in crevices of bark, old wood, or within the soil at the base of the tree, constructing large, persistent nests that can house thousands of individuals and remain active for many years.
The biology of the species centers on the complex interactions within the colony. The lifecycle follows a typical ant development pattern with eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Workers are highly aggressive in defending their territory, specifically targeting any natural predators that attempt to consume the aphids or scale insects that the ants utilize as a primary food source of honeydew.
The damage caused by Liometopum occidentale is mainly indirect but severe. By protecting aphids from beneficial predatory insects like ladybugs and lacewings, the ants cause an explosion in the aphid population. This leads to heavy plant stress, stunted shoots, fruit deformation, and the development of sooty mold caused by the accumulation of honeydew secretions.
Control measures focus on breaking the ant-aphid cycle. Sticky bands applied around tree trunks are highly effective at preventing ants from reaching the canopy. Furthermore, managing the aphid populations directly with biological or chemical sprays is crucial. Removing dead wood, sealing tree hollows, and general sanitation of the orchard floor can also significantly reduce nesting sites.
