The brown diving beetle (Liopterus haemorrhoidalis) is an aquatic insect belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Dytiscidae. While primarily known as a predator in aquatic ecosystems, it can become a significant agricultural pest in flooded cultivation systems such as rice paddies.
The primary crop damaged by this species is rice. The beetles and their larvae are particularly destructive during the early stages of rice growth, specifically when seeds are germinating and seedlings are establishing themselves in the water-logged soil of the fields.
The biology of Liopterus haemorrhoidalis involves a life cycle adapted to stagnant or slow-moving water. Adults lay eggs on aquatic vegetation or substrate. The larvae are voracious feeders, using their specialized mouthparts to cut through plant tissues, which often results in the severance of young rice stems.
The damage caused by these beetles is characterized by the thinning of rice stands. When larvae feed on the base of young stalks, the plants wilt, turn yellow, and eventually die.
