Giant African land snail

The giant African land snail (Lissachatina fulica) is a major agricultural pest belonging to the Achatinidae family within the order Stylommatophora. Recognized globally as an invasive species, it poses a significant threat to global agriculture and biodiversity due to its rapid reproduction and indiscriminate feeding habits.

This mollusk is highly polyphagous, known to consume over 500 plant species. In agricultural settings, it causes severe damage to vegetables such as lettuce, cabbage, and tomatoes, as well as fruits like papaya and banana. By feeding on seedlings and mature crops, these snails can render entire harvests commercially unviable, causing substantial economic losses for farmers.

The biology of Lissachatina fulica is characterized by extreme resilience and high fertility. As a hermaphrodite, every individual can lay hundreds of eggs, potentially producing thousands of offspring within a single year. During dry or cold periods, they enter a state of estivation, retreating into their shells and burying themselves in the soil, allowing them to survive adverse weather conditions until better conditions return.

The damage caused by these snails is identifiable by large, irregular holes in foliage and deep gouges in fruits and vegetables. Beyond immediate tissue consumption, their thick, mucus-filled trails contaminate produce, making it unattractive and susceptible to secondary fungal or bacterial infections. Heavy infestations can lead to total crop failure if left unchecked.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Key strategies include:

• Sanitation: Removing debris and hiding spots around the garden.
• Mechanical Barriers: Using copper foil or crushed eggshells to deter movement.
• Trapping: Implementing beer or bait traps to capture snails at night.
• Chemical Control: Applying approved molluscicides, such as iron phosphate baits, in targeted areas to reduce population levels safely.
