Green shield bug Loxa

Loxa pallida is a species of the order Hemiptera, belonging to the family Pentatomidae, commonly known as stink bugs. These insects possess a distinct green coloration that serves as protective camouflage, making them difficult to spot within dense crop canopies.

This pest primarily attacks leguminous crops and certain cereal varieties. Economic losses are most significant in soybean and bean plantations, where the insects target developing pods and seeds, significantly impacting the quality and yield of the harvest.

The life cycle encompasses an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Overwintering occurs in the adult form, typically sheltered within crop residues or the top layer of the soil. As temperatures rise, they emerge to feed and begin the reproductive cycle for the new season.

The damage caused by Loxa pallida involves piercing the plant tissues and extracting sap from the seeds. This feeding behavior causes pod shriveling, seed deformation, and physiological stress to the plant, which often leads to secondary infections and reduced seed viability.

Control measures are centered on an integrated approach to reduce pest pressure. Important steps include maintaining field hygiene to remove overwintering sites, utilizing crop rotation to break life cycles, and applying chemical insecticides when population counts exceed established economic thresholds.
