Description

Macroposthonia is a genus of plant-parasitic nematodes belonging to the family Criconematidae, commonly referred to as ring nematodes due to the prominent, thick cuticle rings covering their bodies. These microscopic pests are widespread globally and represent a persistent challenge for commercial fruit production, orchards, and various agricultural crops.

The host range of these nematodes is extensive, including perennial fruit trees like peaches and apples, grapevines, berry crops, and various ornamental species. They thrive particularly well in light, coarse-textured soils, where their mobility and ability to colonize host root systems are significantly enhanced, leading to rapid population growth.

Biologically, Macroposthonia species are classified as ectoparasites. They do not enter the root tissue but instead attach themselves to the exterior, using a long, needle-like stylet to penetrate the root cortex. By feeding on the cell contents, they weaken the plant. The life cycle involves egg production, several juvenile stages, and finally reaching adulthood, with reproduction rates often peaking during the active growing season.

The damage caused by these nematodes manifests primarily as root system decline. Feeding leads to stunted root tips, reduced lateral root development, and necrotic lesions. Above-ground symptoms are often insidious, presenting as general plant decline, poor fruit size, yellowing foliage, and hypersensitivity to water stress, which can lead to significant economic losses over time.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Before establishing new orchards, soil sampling for nematode population density is crucial. Protection measures include:

  • Rotation with non-host crops to starve the population.
  • Application of approved nematicides if economic thresholds are exceeded.
  • Use of soil amendments to foster natural predatory microorganisms.
  • Maintaining optimal irrigation and fertilization to help plants tolerate nematode feeding pressure.
