Ring nematode

Macroposthonia annulata is a specialized plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Criconematidae. These microscopic organisms are known as ectoparasites, living in the soil and feeding on the outer cells of plant roots. Their unique morphology and feeding behavior make them significant threats to both perennial and annual cropping systems.

The host range of this species is quite broad, affecting various fruit trees, small berries, grapevine, and ornamental plants. By colonizing the root zone, these nematodes establish a chronic stress factor for the plant, leading to stunted growth, reduced nutrient uptake, and overall poor plant health in infected orchards and plantations.

The biology of Macroposthonia annulata follows a classic nematode development pattern, consisting of an egg stage, four larval stages, and an adult stage. These nematodes are recognized by their distinct annulated (ringed) cuticle, which provides protection and aids in movement through soil particles. They rely on root secretions to locate their hosts and may persist in the soil even in the absence of suitable hosts for some time.

Damage symptoms typically include stunted root development, necrosis, and the browning of fine feeder roots. As the plant loses the ability to effectively absorb water and nutrients, it manifests symptoms such as leaf chlorosis, premature wilting, and increased susceptibility to secondary soil-borne pathogens. The cumulative effect of these injuries significantly reduces crop yields and tree longevity.

Management practices focus on sanitation and preventative measures. Farmers should prioritize the use of certified, nematode-free planting material to prevent introduction. Cultural methods, such as crop rotation, soil solarization, and the integration of nematode-suppressive cover crops, are essential for long-term population management. In intensive systems, the application of targeted nematicides is used only when established economic injury thresholds are exceeded.
