Description

Macroposthonia ornata is a species of plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Criconematidae, within the order Tylenchida. Known commonly as a ring nematode due to the prominent annulations on its cuticle, this microscopic organism functions as an ectoparasite. It feeds on plant roots from the outside, using its elongated stylet to penetrate root tissues.

This nematode has a wide host range, frequently affecting horticultural crops, grapevines, and various ornamental plants. It thrives best in lighter, well-drained soil types which facilitate movement and allow the nematode to locate host roots efficiently. Their distribution within the soil profile usually corresponds to the concentration of active root systems.

The life cycle of this species consists of egg, juvenile, and adult stages. The nematodes reproduce sexually and deposit eggs into the rhizosphere. Once the juveniles emerge, they begin feeding almost immediately. The rate of population growth is highly dependent on environmental factors such as soil temperature, moisture levels, and the presence of suitable host roots.

Damage caused by this nematode is often cumulative. By feeding on the root tips and epidermal cells, the nematode causes necrosis and limits the root system's ability to absorb water and essential nutrients. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and reduced yields, with severe cases leading to general decline and wilting.
