Macrotermes

The genus Macrotermes is a significant group of insects belonging to the order Isoptera, family Termitidae. Known for building some of the largest termite mounds, these social insects operate in highly organized colonies. Their complex social structure, involving castes such as soldiers, workers, and reproductives, makes them resilient and difficult to eradicate from agricultural areas.

These termites are considered major pests for a wide array of crops. They pose a severe threat to tropical staples like maize, sugarcane, and cotton, as well as perennial crops like cocoa, tea, and coffee. They are particularly attracted to cellulose-rich materials and can cause extensive damage to both young seedlings and mature, established trees.

The biology of Macrotermes is defined by their obligate symbiosis with fungi, which they cultivate in specialized chambers within their mounds. The workers forage for plant material, which is then processed to feed the fungal gardens. The life cycle consists of incomplete metamorphosis, and a successful colony can thrive for many years, with a single queen capable of producing thousands of eggs daily.

The damage caused by these insects is often cryptic and devastating. They attack the root system and burrow into the stems, often covering the surface of plants with mud tubes for protection. This prevents adequate nutrient flow, leading to rapid wilting, lodging, and eventual death of the plant. Significant yield losses occur because the damage is often discovered only after the plant has already collapsed.
