As a significant agricultural pest, this species poses a threat to a variety of crops, including maize, sorghum, millet, and sugar cane. They are particularly destructive to young seedlings, where the loss of the root system quickly results in the death of the plant, often leading to significant yield losses in tropical farming systems.

The biology of Macrotermes bellicosus centers on highly organized caste systems. The colony relies on the cultivation of fungi within the mound, which helps break down cellulose-rich material. Workers forage over large distances to collect plant debris, straw, and woody material, which they bring back to the nest for processing.
