Systematic position: Macrotermes natalensis belongs to the order Isoptera and the family Termitidae. It is recognized as one of the most significant mound-building termite species in Africa, playing a dual role in the ecosystem as a decomposer and a major agricultural pest.

Crops damaged: The pest poses a severe threat to various economic crops, including maize, sugarcane, cotton, tea, and various forestry seedlings like eucalyptus. It effectively targets both the root systems and the stems of these plants.

Biology and life cycle: The colony exhibits a sophisticated caste system consisting of workers, soldiers, and the royal pair. Macrotermes natalensis is known for its obligate symbiosis with Termitomyces fungi. The workers collect plant material, which is processed in fungal combs inside the mound, providing the necessary nutrients for the colony's growth.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: The damage is primarily caused by worker termites feeding on the root zones and burrowing into the stalks of host plants. This destructive activity disrupts nutrient and water uptake, leading to yellowing, lodging, and often total crop failure, particularly during dry spells when termites forage aggressively for moisture.
