Lemon slug

Systematic position. The lemon slug (Malacolimax tenellus) belongs to the phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, and family Limacidae. It is a distinct species of keeled slug, easily recognized by its bright yellow body and specific mucus, which differentiates it from other common agricultural slug pests.

Crops damaged. While this species is often associated with woodland habitats, it frequently invades home gardens and greenhouses. It feeds on a variety of plants, showing a strong preference for tender seedlings, lettuce, cabbage, strawberries, and various ornamental flowers. It is also known to consume fungi and decaying plant matter in the field.

Biology and life cycle. The lemon slug is highly dependent on humidity. It remains inactive during the day in cool, damp hiding spots like soil crevices or under garden debris. Reproduction involves laying eggs in moist soil, with the life cycle synchronized to coincide with the wettest periods of the year. Juveniles mature relatively quickly, feeding on available vegetation until they reach adulthood.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. Damage is characterized by irregular holes in leaves, often leading to total defoliation of small plants. The presence of mucus trails on produce reduces the quality and marketability of crops. Furthermore, the slug's feeding activity often introduces secondary infections, such as bacterial soft rot and mold, which can destroy the remaining plant tissues.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control.

• Sanitation: Remove weeds, rocks, and debris where slugs seek shelter during the day.
• Barriers: Apply copper tape, crushed eggshells, or wood ash around vulnerable beds.
• Biological control: Encourage natural predators like ground beetles and hedgehogs.
• Chemical control: Use iron phosphate-based molluscicides, which are safe for the environment and pets.
