Systematic position. Marasmia patnalis belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. It is a significant pest of rice crops, specifically adapted to tropical and subtropical climates where rice cultivation is intensive and continuous throughout the year.

Host plants. The primary host for this species is Oryza sativa (rice). While it shows a strong preference for rice, it can occasionally be found on wild grasses surrounding rice fields, which serve as alternative food sources and shelters during the fallow periods or when the main crop is not available.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. Females lay eggs individually or in small clusters on the underside of rice leaves. The larvae undergo five instars, and the entire cycle is highly dependent on environmental factors such as temperature and relative humidity. In warm regions, the pest can complete its life cycle in approximately one month, leading to overlapping generations.

Damage patterns and economic impact. The larvae feed by stitching the edges of the rice leaf together with silk, forming a protective tube. Inside this shelter, they scrape the green tissue, causing the leaves to turn white and transparent. This damage significantly impairs the plant's photosynthetic capacity. When the infestation is severe, it leads to leaf necrosis, stunted growth, and substantial reductions in grain yield.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Marasmia patnalis. Key strategies include:

• Monitoring crop health to detect early infestations.
• Avoiding excessive nitrogen fertilization that stimulates rapid, succulent leaf growth.
• Preserving natural predators and parasitoids that regulate pest populations.
• Using biological or selective chemical insecticides when larvae counts exceed the economic injury level.
