Marasmia trapezalis

Marasmia trapezalis is a moth species belonging to the family Crambidae, recognized as a significant pest of various grass crops. This insect is primarily distributed across tropical and subtropical environments where its life cycle can proceed continuously throughout the growing season.

The primary hosts for this pest include maize (corn), sorghum, sugarcane, and pearl millet. In favorable conditions, the larvae can cause substantial economic losses by reducing the photosynthetic capacity of the crops, which directly impacts the grain yield and overall plant vigor.

The life cycle of the moth consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The female moth typically oviposits on the underside of host leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae (caterpillars) construct feeding galleries by folding or tying leaf edges with silk webbing, which provides them with essential protection from predators and environmental factors.

The feeding behavior of the larvae results in distinct longitudinal streaks on the leaves. By scraping the chlorophyll tissue while leaving the upper epidermis intact, the larvae create translucent windows that later turn brown and necrotic. In severe infestations, multiple leaves may wither, leading to significant stunted growth and reduced seed set in affected maize plants.

Effective management of Marasmia trapezalis requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach including:

• Regular scouting of fields to detect early larval activity.
• Field sanitation to eliminate crop residues and weeds that serve as alternative hosts.
• Strategic application of systemic insecticides when thresholds are exceeded.
• Conservation of natural biological control agents, such as parasitoid wasps that attack larvae.
• Use of resistant or tolerant crop varieties where available in local breeding programs.
