Description
Systematic position: The oak hawk-moth (Marumba quercus) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Sphingidae. It is a well-known species that is primarily associated with deciduous forests, specifically those dominated by oak species.
Host plants and economic impact: The larvae feed exclusively on the foliage of oak trees (Quercus spp.). While usually occurring at low densities in stable environments, outbreaks can cause significant defoliation, which reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the host trees and may lead to reduced timber production or forest decline.
Biology and life cycle: Adults are typically on the wing from June to July. Females deposit eggs individually on the underside of oak leaves. After hatching, the larvae go through several developmental instars, feeding on foliage until autumn. They pupate in underground chambers in the soil, where they overwinter to emerge the following year.
Nature of damage: Caterpillars are voracious feeders. In the early stages, damage is subtle, but later instars consume large portions of the leaf tissue. When larvae density is high, they can cause nearly total defoliation, leaving trees with only the midribs of the leaves, which stresses the tree significantly.
Control measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is the best approach. This includes the use of selective biological insecticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis during the early larval stages, as well as preserving natural habitats for predators such as parasitic wasps and insectivorous birds to maintain a natural balance.
