Matsucoccus

Systematic position. Matsucoccus is a genus of scale insects within the family Matsucoccidae, order Hemiptera. These insects are specialized sap-sucking pests that have co-evolved with coniferous trees, particularly the genus Pinus, leading to complex host-parasite interactions that often challenge forest managers and arborists.

Host plants. The primary hosts are various species of pine (Pinus). Depending on the specific species of Matsucoccus, they can infest native forest stands as well as urban or commercial plantations. The pests target the bark and twigs, making them particularly dangerous for young saplings and mature trees weakened by environmental stressors.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves multiple developmental stages, starting from eggs laid in protected crevices in the bark. Newly hatched nymphs, often called crawlers, are mobile and move across the tree surface to find suitable feeding sites. Once settled, they remain relatively stationary, secreting protective waxy coverings that make them resistant to many environmental factors.

Damage and impact. Feeding damage occurs when nymphs and adult females pierce the bark to extract nutrients from the phloem. This feeding activity causes localized tissue death, disrupts nutrient transport, and induces crown thinning. Symptoms include needle yellowing, branch dieback, and the presence of copious resin flow. Severe infestations lead to tree decline and increased susceptibility to secondary pests like wood-boring beetles.

Control measures. Management of Matsucoccus requires an integrated approach to maintain forest health:

• Implementing strict quarantine protocols to prevent the spread of infested nursery stock.
• Monitoring programs using pheromone traps to track population density and activity.
• Silvicultural practices, including the removal of heavily infested trees to reduce the population load.
• Targeted application of systemic insecticides during the crawler emergence phase, when they are most vulnerable.
