Pine bast scale

Matsucoccus josephi

Description

Systematic position. Matsucoccus josephi belongs to the family Margarodidae within the order Hemiptera. It is recognized as a significant pest affecting coniferous forests, particularly known for its impact on pine populations in the Mediterranean basin.

Host plants. The primary host of this species is Pinus halepensis (Aleppo pine). Infestations can also be observed in other related pine species. The economic significance of this pest is high, as it threatens both forestry timber production and landscape integrity in affected regions.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves distinct stages including egg, nymph (multiple instars), and adult. Adult females are typically sessile, whereas males are winged and highly mobile, facilitating dispersal and mating. The insect's development is highly synchronized with the host tree's phenology.

Damage and severity. The pine bast scale causes injury by feeding on the sap of the tree's stems and young shoots. This feeding process leads to severe resinosis, crust deformation, and the eventual decline of the tree. Heavily infested trees show symptoms of crown yellowing and may suffer dieback if the pest pressure remains consistently high.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Matsucoccus josephi. Strategies include monitoring populations with pheromone traps to time interventions correctly, preserving natural enemies like parasitoids, and implementing strict silvicultural practices such as removing and destroying infested material to prevent further spreading.
