Systematic position. The Dahurian pine scale (Matsucoccus dahuriensis) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Margarodidae. It is a specialized sap-sucking insect known for its association with specific pine species, particularly the Dahurian pine, which serves as its primary host.
Host plants and damage level. This insect primarily infests Pinus dahurica. As a pest, it significantly impacts the vitality of the trees by feeding on phloem sap. Heavy infestations result in chlorosis, reduced needle length, premature needle shedding, stunted growth, and eventually, the mortality of the host plant if the infestation persists over several seasons.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves distinct stages, including egg, multiple larval instars, and adults. The insect spends the winter as a larva hidden in bark crevices. Adult females are sessile, remaining on the bark to lay eggs, while winged males emerge to mate.
