Maritime pine scale

The Maritime pine scale (Matsucoccus feytaudi) is a scale insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Matsucoccidae. This specialist pest is known for causing significant physiological stress to various pine species, most notably the Maritime pine (Pinus pinaster).

The host range is largely restricted to pine trees. While Pinus pinaster is the primary host, the insect's ability to adapt to different environmental conditions makes it a persistent threat in Mediterranean and neighboring climatic zones where susceptible pine species are cultivated.

The biological cycle of this pest is univoltine, meaning it produces only one generation per year. The insect spends the majority of its life cycle hidden beneath the bark scales of the host tree, which protects it from adverse weather conditions and many contact-based pesticides.

Damage is caused by both nymphs and adult females feeding on the tree's phloem. This feeding process results in severe weakening of the tree, characterized by canopy yellowing, stunted growth, and eventually tree mortality when the density of the scale infestation becomes extreme.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

• Regular forest health surveys to detect early stages of infestation.
• Removal and destruction of heavily infested trees to reduce inoculum pressure.
• Biological control through the conservation of existing natural predators and parasitoids.
• Targeted use of systemic insecticides in high-value ornamental or nursery settings.
