Matsucoccus macrocicatrices is a species of scale insect belonging to the family Matsucoccidae. As a specialized pest, it primarily targets pine species. These insects are notoriously difficult to monitor because they reside deep within the bark crevices, effectively camouflaging themselves against the rough texture of the host tree.

The primary hosts for this insect are specific pine species. By feeding on the phloem and cambium layers of the bark, the insect depletes the tree's energy reserves. This feeding behavior disrupts nutrient transport, leading to a noticeable decline in tree vigor and making the host more susceptible to drought and secondary pathogens.

The life cycle involves multiple nymphal stages, during which the insect remains relatively stationary while feeding. Adult females produce waxy secretions that act as a protective covering and cause the distinct, visible scarring on the bark that gives the species its name. Reproduction timing is strictly tied to the seasonal growth cycles of the host tree.

Typical damage includes premature needle yellowing, thinning crowns, and branch dieback. The most diagnostic sign of a heavy infestation is the presence of numerous small, distinct scars on the tree bark where the insects have settled.
