Systematic position: The species Matsucoccus paucicitatrices belongs to the family Margarodidae (giant scales) within the order Hemiptera. These insects are highly specialized sap-sucking pests that have evolved to thrive specifically on coniferous hosts, often going unnoticed until significant damage is caused.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets species of the genus Pinus (pine). Both young seedlings in forest nurseries and mature trees in plantation forests or urban landscapes can be infested, leading to severe physiological stress across various pine species depending on regional environmental conditions.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of this scale insect typically consists of several developmental stages, including eggs, multiple nymphal instars, and adults. The pests often exhibit a cryptic lifestyle, hiding in bark crevices or under protective scales, which complicates early detection. The emergence of crawlers is usually synchronized with favorable spring temperatures, allowing them to disperse across the tree canopy.

Nature of damage and harm: By extracting nutrients from the tree's vascular system, the pine bast scale causes widespread weakening. Symptoms include chlorosis (yellowing of needles), growth stunting, shoot deformation, and localized necrotic lesions on the bark. Heavy infestations can lead to crown thinning and, in extreme cases, the mortality of the host tree.

Control measures:

• Execute sanitary thinning by removing and destroying infested branches or entire trees.
