Pine bast scale

The pine bast scale (Matsucoccus pini) is a specialized insect pest of coniferous trees belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Matsucoccidae. This scale insect is recognized as a significant threat to various pine species, capable of causing widespread decline in forest health.

The primary host for this pest is the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), although other pine species can also be affected. The scale insect colonizes the stems and branches of trees, preferring areas with thinner bark, which makes it particularly dangerous for younger trees and dense plantation stands.

The biological cycle of Matsucoccus pini involves several developmental stages, typically with one or two generations per year depending on the climate. The insects overwinter as first-instar nymphs sheltered within bark crevices. As temperatures rise in spring, they complete their development, leading to the emergence of reproductive adults that lay eggs in protective waxy ovisacs.

Damage is caused by the nymphs and females feeding on the plant's vascular system, specifically the cambium layer. This feeding disrupts nutrient transport and causes localized necrotic lesions. Symptoms of infestation include reduced needle growth, yellowing foliage, thinning of the canopy, and, in severe cases, the eventual death of the tree due to secondary attacks by wood-boring beetles.

Management and control strategies focus on prevention and silvicultural practices. Monitoring for early signs of infestation, such as characteristic white wax filaments on the bark, is crucial. Effective control includes:

• Sanitary removal and destruction of heavily infested trees.
• Proper forest management to reduce stand stress.
• Targeted chemical treatments in nurseries using systemic insecticides during the crawler emergence phase.
