Gleditsia seed beetle

The Gleditsia seed beetle (Megabruchidius dorsalis) is a destructive insect belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Bruchidae. Originating from Asia, this pest has expanded its range globally, specifically targeting the seeds of the honey locust tree (Gleditsia triacanthos), causing significant ecological and economic impact.

The primary hosts for this beetle are the seeds of Gleditsia species. The larvae feed exclusively within the seed, consuming the embryo and endosperm. This feeding behavior destroys the viability of the seed, effectively preventing the propagation of the host trees in both natural and nursery environments.

The biological cycle of the beetle is well-synchronized with the ripening period of the pods. Female beetles lay eggs on the surface of the pods. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the seeds, where they complete their larval stages and pupation. The life cycle can result in one or more generations per year depending on environmental temperatures.

Damage is identified by the presence of small, circular exit holes on the pods and seeds, which represent the emergence point of the adult beetles. The level of infestation can be devastating, often rendering the entire seed crop in a specific area non-viable, which poses a threat to biodiversity and silvicultural efforts.

Effective management strategies against Megabruchidius dorsalis require an integrated pest management approach:

• Sanitation practices, such as removing and destroying infested pods from the ground.
• Strict quarantine regulations to prevent the movement of infested seeds between regions.
• Use of cold storage or fumigation for seed stock to eliminate hidden larvae.
