Sophora seed beetle

The Sophora seed beetle (Megabruchidius sophorae) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the family Bruchidae within the order Coleoptera. It is primarily recognized for its role as a seed predator, specifically targeting plants within the genus Styphnolobium, with a strong preference for Styphnolobium japonicum (Japanese pagoda tree).

As an oligophagous species, its entire larval development is completed inside the seeds of the host plant. The adult beetle lays eggs on the surface of the pods, and upon hatching, the larvae tunnel directly into the developing seeds to consume the embryo and endosperm, effectively destroying the plant's reproductive units.

The life cycle is closely synchronized with the host plant's phenology. The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis within the seed, and the emergence of the adult beetle is marked by the presence of circular exit holes on both the pods and the seeds. This pest can complete its development within stored seeds if the infestation occurs before or during harvest.

The damage caused by Megabruchidius sophorae is significant in horticultural and forestry contexts. Heavy infestations drastically reduce seed germination rates, making seed collection for propagation difficult. This economic impact is particularly felt in nurseries and areas where the tree is cultivated for pharmaceutical purposes or urban landscaping.

Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical control. Key strategies include:

• Collecting and destroying fallen or visibly infested pods to reduce the pest population for the next season.
• Implementing systemic insecticide treatments during the pod development stage where infestation levels are high.
• Inspecting imported seed lots to prevent the spread of the beetle to new regions.
• Applying cold storage treatments to seeds, which can inhibit the development of larvae inside.
