Systematic position: The fire jewel beetle (Melanophila acuminata) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae. It is a specialized insect known for its ability to detect forest fires using specialized infrared sensors, which helps it locate burned or heat-stressed trees for oviposition.
Host plants: This pest primarily targets coniferous trees, especially those damaged by forest fires, drought, or storm damage. The main host species include various pines (Pinus), spruces (Picea), firs (Abies), and larches (Larix), which provide the specific thermal and chemical cues the beetle requires.
