Description
The hemlock borer (Melanophila fulvoguttata) is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the Buprestidae family. This insect is a significant pest of conifers, particularly known for targeting hemlock trees (Tsuga spp.), as well as spruce and occasionally other pine family members.
In terms of biology, the lifecycle typically spans one or two years depending on climatic conditions. Adult beetles lay eggs in the crevices of bark. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the inner bark and cambium layer, where they feed extensively, creating wide, winding galleries that effectively girdle the tree.
The damage caused by the hemlock borer is severe, particularly for trees already stressed by drought, competition, or infestations of other pests like the hemlock woolly adelgid. The primary symptoms of attack include yellowing of the foliage, crown dieback, and eventually the death of the entire tree if the infestation is heavy.
Visible signs of this beetle's presence include D-shaped or oval emergence holes on the bark and the accumulation of boring dust in bark crevices. Because the larvae feed under the bark, systemic damage is often irreversible by the time external symptoms become obvious to the casual observer.
Management strategies focus on preventive silviculture. Key steps include maintaining vigorous tree health through proper site selection and irrigation, as well as the immediate removal and destruction of heavily infested trees to reduce the local population of the pest. In urban settings, contact insecticides applied during the peak flight period of adults may provide some level of protection.
