Larch buprestid

The larch buprestid (Latin Melanophila guttulata) belongs to the family Buprestidae in the order Coleoptera. This species is a dangerous xylophagous pest that specializes in attacking coniferous tree species. The adult insects are medium-sized beetles with a characteristic metallic sheen, which is typical for members of this family.

The primary crops damaged by this pest are members of the Larix genus (larch). In forest ecosystems and tree nurseries, the insect infests both weakened and relatively healthy trees, often targeting areas with damaged bark or sunscald. The damage caused manifests as a significant decline in the physiological state of the host plant.

The life cycle of the larch buprestid is closely tied to the condition of the host tree. Females lay eggs in bark crevices, after which the emerging larvae tunnel under the bark to feed in the cambial layer and sapwood. Larval feeding disrupts sap flow, which leads to the gradual dieback of individual branches or the entire tree.

The characteristic signs of buprestid activity include winding galleries packed with boring dust (frass) located directly under the bark. Externally, damage may manifest as needle yellowing, resin flow, and general tree depression. During mass outbreaks, this pest is capable of causing the drying and death of significant areas of coniferous plantations.
