Description
The poplar buprestid (Melanophila picta) is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the family Buprestidae. It is considered a significant threat to various forest and ornamental tree species, particularly in regions with hot and dry climates where trees are often under physiological stress.
This pest primarily attacks members of the Salicaceae family. Key host plants include various species of poplars (Populus spp.) and willows (Salix spp.). While it prefers weakened or stressed trees, heavy infestations can occasionally spread to apparently healthy trees, leading to rapid decline.
The biological cycle begins in late spring, matching the emergence of adult beetles. After mating, females lay eggs in bark crevices. The larvae bore into the inner bark and cambium layer, creating erratic galleries. These activities disrupt the flow of nutrients and moisture, which is critical for the tree's survival.
The damage caused by Melanophila picta is often insidious. As larvae consume the cambium, they effectively girdle branches or the main trunk. This causes the foliage to wilt and eventually leads to dieback of the crown. In severe cases, the tree becomes brittle and prone to structural failure.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Management strategies include:
- Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization.
- Prompt removal and destruction of infested branches or entire trees to reduce the population.
- Monitoring the timing of adult emergence to apply targeted insecticide treatments if necessary.
