Chicken body louse

Menacanthus is a genus of lice belonging to the family Menoponidae within the order Phthiraptera. The most prevalent and economically significant species, Menacanthus stramineus, is commonly known as the chicken body louse. These insects act as obligate ectoparasites, spending their entire life cycle on poultry, thereby causing severe stress and health degradation in chicken flocks.

The biology of Menacanthus is distinct from other lice because they possess mouthparts specialized for chewing not only feather barbs but also the skin of the host. They prefer areas with thin feathers, such as the vent, breast, and under the wings. By feeding on feather debris, skin scales, and occasionally blood from irritated skin, they cause constant discomfort to the birds.

The life cycle begins with eggs laid in clusters at the base of feathers, particularly near the vent. Under optimal conditions, the eggs hatch into nymphs, which undergo three molts before reaching adulthood. The total life cycle takes approximately two to three weeks, allowing for rapid population growth, especially in crowded environments where transmission between birds occurs through direct contact.

Infestation symptoms include intense itching, restless behavior, and decreased egg production. In severe cases, the skin becomes inflamed and crusty, leading to bacterial infections. A heavy infestation can weaken the immune system, lower feed conversion ratios, and cause significant economic losses in both industrial poultry farms and backyard setups.

Effective control strategies require a multi-faceted approach. Primary methods include the thorough cleaning and disinfection of poultry housing, coupled with the direct application of approved insecticidal dusts or sprays on the birds. Maintaining dry litter and providing access to dust bathing areas filled with wood ash or sand are essential cultural practices to suppress louse populations.
