Chicken body louse

The chicken body louse (lat. Menacanthus stramineus) is an ectoparasite belonging to the order Mallophaga and the family Menoponidae. It is a significant pest in the poultry industry, known for its ability to cause severe irritation and health decline in domestic birds such as chickens, turkeys, and pheasants.

Unlike agricultural pests that damage plants, this insect is specialized to live on the skin of poultry. It feeds on feathers, skin debris, and sometimes blood from areas where the skin has been damaged or is thin, such as the vent, breast, and under the wings. Its presence can be identified by the rapid movement of the insects across the bird's skin when feathers are parted.

The life cycle of Menacanthus stramineus occurs entirely on the host bird. Females glue their eggs to the barbs of feathers, particularly in the vent area. The nymphs hatch and develop through several stages, reaching adulthood in about two to three weeks. Because they cannot survive away from the host for more than a few days, transmission primarily occurs through direct bird-to-bird contact.

The damage caused by these lice is substantial. Infested birds show signs of extreme discomfort, itching, and restlessness. Severe infestations can lead to decreased egg production, weight loss, and in young birds, stunted growth. Furthermore, the skin damage caused by biting and scratching creates entry points for secondary bacterial or fungal infections.

Effective control measures include both physical and chemical interventions. Regular cleaning and disinfection of poultry houses are essential to disrupt the life cycle. Treatment of the birds involves the application of approved insecticides in the form of dusts, sprays, or systemic treatments. Providing dust baths containing sand and wood ash is also a traditional and effective way to help birds groom themselves.
