Description

The chicken shaft louse (Menopon gallinae) is a common ectoparasite belonging to the order Mallophaga and the family Menoponidae. Unlike agricultural plant pests, this organism is specifically adapted to parasitize avian species, causing significant stress and health issues in poultry populations worldwide.

The life cycle of Menopon gallinae is entirely dependent on its host. The insects complete their transformation on the bird's body, where eggs are cemented to the base of the feathers. Under optimal conditions, the transition from egg to adult takes approximately three weeks, allowing the population to reach damaging levels very quickly.

Regarding its impact, this louse feeds on feather barbules and skin debris. By moving rapidly across the bird's skin, it causes severe irritation and intense itching. Chronic infestation leads to decreased feed conversion efficiency, weight loss, lowered egg production, and restlessness, as the birds attempt to alleviate the irritation through excessive self-pecking.

The species affects various domestic birds, including chickens, turkeys, and ducks. Infestations are most severe in environments with poor hygiene or high stocking densities. The parasites are easily transmitted between birds through direct contact or communal housing, making flock management a critical aspect of prevention.

Effective control measures require a multi-faceted approach:

  • Application of approved insecticidal dusts, sprays, or systemic treatments.
  • Routine sanitation and deep cleaning of coops to remove shed eggs and nymphs.
  • Providing dust-bathing areas to allow birds to groom themselves naturally.
  • Strict biosecurity to prevent the introduction of infested birds into existing flocks.
