Ring nematode
Mesocriconema
Description
Systematic position: The genus Mesocriconema belongs to the order Tylenchida and the family Criconematidae. These nematodes are widely recognized by their distinctive, coarse body annulations, which give them a ringed appearance under a microscope. They are among the most common ectoparasitic nematodes found in agricultural soils worldwide.
Affected crops: Ring nematodes act as polyphagous pests, targeting a wide array of agricultural and horticultural plants. They are particularly destructive to perennial crops such as stone fruits (peaches, cherries, plums), grapes, and small fruits like raspberries, while also affecting various vegetable crops and turf grasses.
Biology and life cycle: As ectoparasites, Mesocriconema species live and feed entirely outside the plant root tissue. They utilize a long, robust stylet to penetrate the root cortex and extract nutrients. Their life cycle consists of eggs and four juvenile stages, all occurring within the soil matrix, where they can survive periods of environmental stress by entering a state of dormancy.
Nature of damage and pest status: The feeding activity causes mechanical injuries to the root surface, leading to localized cell death and necrosis. These lesions compromise the plant's vascular system, hindering the uptake of water and essential minerals. Weakened root systems are highly susceptible to secondary infections by soil-borne pathogens, which exacerbate stunted growth and reduce overall yield.
Control measures: Managing ring nematode populations requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:
- Planting certified nematode-free nursery stock.
- Implementing long-term crop rotation with non-host plants or cover crops that inhibit nematode reproduction.
- Applying soil solarization in controlled environments to reduce initial soil populations.
- Maintaining vigorous plant growth through balanced fertilization and adequate irrigation.
- Using targeted chemical nematicides when infestation levels exceed economic thresholds.
