Description
Mesocriconema crenatum is a species of plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Criconematidae, order Tylenchida. Often referred to as a ring nematode, this organism is easily identified by the prominent, thick cuticle rings covering its body. As an ectoparasite, it feeds externally on the roots of various host plants.
This pest has a broad host range, posing a significant threat to fruit trees, small fruits like strawberries and raspberries, potatoes, and various vegetable crops. It is particularly problematic in permanent crops where undisturbed soil allows the nematode populations to flourish for many years without the interference of soil cultivation.
The life cycle of the nematode consists of egg, juvenile, and adult stages. It depends on the presence of host roots to feed through its stylet, which is inserted into the root epidermal cells. The biological process is highly influenced by soil temperature, moisture levels, and the soil texture, which dictate the speed of maturation and the reproductive capacity of the population.
Damage caused by Mesocriconema crenatum is often overlooked until significant symptoms appear. Feeding leads to stunted growth, nutrient deficiency symptoms such as chlorosis, and reduced yield. The roots often appear darkened or necrotic, and their ability to uptake water is drastically reduced, making the plants more susceptible to drought and pathogen attacks.
