Ring nematode

Systematic position: Mesocriconema xenoplax belongs to the order Tylenchida and the family Criconematidae. It is a highly specialized ectoparasitic nematode that lives in the rhizosphere of plants and is considered a significant threat to long-term orchard sustainability.

Host range: This pest primarily affects stone fruit crops, including peaches, plums, cherries, and almonds. Additionally, it has been observed on grapevines and various orchard fruit trees. The nematode's ability to survive on a wide range of root systems makes it a difficult pest to eradicate once established in the soil.

Biology and life cycle: Mesocriconema xenoplax feeds on the external cells of roots using its long stylet. Unlike endoparasitic nematodes, it does not enter the plant tissue but remains attached to the surface. Its life cycle consists of several stages, and it can survive in the soil for extended periods even in the absence of a host by entering a quiescent state.

Damage and pathogenicity: Feeding damage restricts the development of root hairs and lateral roots, drastically reducing the plant's nutrient and water uptake capacity. Infected trees often exhibit stunted growth, chlorosis, and increased susceptibility to environmental stressors, such as drought or frost. Furthermore, it is a key vector for the "peach tree short life" syndrome, facilitating bacterial infections.

Management strategies: Effective management relies on a multi-pronged approach. Pre-plant soil fumigation is often necessary in heavily infested areas. Integrated pest management (IPM) practices include the use of nematode-resistant rootstocks, maintaining soil health with organic amendments, and implementing crop rotation with non-host plants prior to establishing a new orchard. Regular soil analysis is crucial for monitoring populations.
