Microhodotermes viator, commonly known as the South African harvester termite, is a species belonging to the family Hodotermitidae. Unlike subterranean termites that feed on wood, these insects specialize in harvesting herbaceous plant materials, which makes them a significant concern for rangeland management and agricultural production.

The biology of this species is characterized by the construction of deep subterranean nests that allow them to survive in harsh, arid climates. The colony consists of a specialized caste system where workers forage for dry and green plant materials. They exhibit complex social behaviors, communicating through pheromones and vibrations to navigate to food sources across vast territories.

These termites affect a variety of plant species, primarily grasses, cereals, and young seedlings. Their foraging range can be extensive, leading to widespread damage across agricultural fields. By removing the plant cover, they not only directly impact yield but also contribute to severe soil erosion and degradation of land productivity in arid regions.

The damage caused by Microhodotermes viator is often recognized by cleared patches of land where all vegetation has been harvested by the colony.
