Microtermes
Microtermes
Description
Microtermes is a genus of termites belonging to the Termitidae family, often referred to as higher termites. These soil-dwelling insects are significant agricultural pests primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions. Because they live underground or inside plant tissues, they are notoriously difficult to detect until substantial damage to crops has already occurred.
As a polyphagous pest, Microtermes affects a wide range of essential agricultural crops. Common hosts include cereals such as maize, wheat, and millet, as well as industrial crops like sugarcane, cotton, and groundnuts. They also frequently attack fruit trees and seedlings, targeting the root system and the base of the stems, leading to severe plant stress or death.
The biology of these termites is defined by a highly organized social structure consisting of workers, soldiers, and reproductive individuals. Worker termites are the primary agents of destruction. They actively forage for cellulose, constructing intricate underground tunnels and soil galleries on the surface of plant stems, which protect them from desiccation and natural predators while they feed.
The damage caused by Microtermes is both direct and indirect. By tunneling into roots and stalks, they interrupt the plant's vascular system, preventing the transport of water and nutrients. This results in the lodging of crops, susceptibility to fungal pathogens, and rapid wilting. In many cases, entire patches of a field can be decimated within a short period if not managed properly.
Effective management requires a combination of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. Key control measures include:
- Early detection through regular field scouting for soil tunnels.
- Seed treatment with systemic insecticides, particularly in high-risk areas.
- Application of biological control agents like entomopathogenic fungi.
- Maintaining soil organic matter to support natural biological control.
- Destroying termite nests through deep tillage during land preparation.
