Description
The genus Microthyris belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. These moths are recognized as significant pests that affect various plant species, particularly those in the Convolvulaceae family, posing a persistent threat to agricultural stability in warmer climates.
The primary host crops susceptible to Microthyris infestation include sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) and various ornamental species of morning glory. Their ability to thrive on both cultivated and wild hosts allows them to establish stable populations that can quickly move into agricultural fields.
The life cycle of the moth follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larvae (caterpillars) are the stage responsible for the primary damage. They typically feed on the undersides of leaves, progressing through several instars while consuming significant amounts of plant tissue, leading to rapid defoliation.
Damage is characterized by extensive leaf skeletonization, where the parenchyma is consumed, leaving only the vascular framework. Caterpillars are known for spinning silken webs that bind leaves together.
