Monomorium is a genus of small ants belonging to the family Formicidae and the order Hymenoptera. While often perceived as household pests, various species within this genus pose a significant threat to agricultural and horticultural crops by facilitating the proliferation of sap-sucking insects.
These ants are known to impact a wide variety of plants, including vegetables, fruits, and ornamentals. Their primary damage is indirect; they establish mutualistic relationships with aphids, mealybugs, and scale insects, protecting them from predators in exchange for honeydew, which leads to massive outbreaks of these secondary pests.
The biology of Monomorium is characterized by polygyny, meaning colonies have multiple queens, which makes them highly resilient and difficult to eradicate. Their life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. They are highly adaptable and often choose the rhizosphere of plants or greenhouse structures as nesting sites.
The economic damage caused by these ants is substantial. Besides supporting pests that weaken plants, their nesting activities can damage root systems, disrupt soil moisture balance, and facilitate the spread of various plant pathogens. Furthermore, the honeydew accumulation promotes the growth of sooty mold, hindering photosynthesis.
Control measures should be comprehensive and targeted. Key strategies include:
- Using slow-acting toxic baits that are carried into the nest to eliminate the queens.
- Applying insecticidal barriers or tanglefoot on tree trunks.
- Controlling aphid and mealybug populations to remove the ants' food source.
