Description
Systematic position: Monosteira lobulifera belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Tingidae, commonly known as lace bugs. They are named for the intricate, reticulated, lace-like appearance of their wings and pronotum, which provides excellent camouflage on the underside of host leaves.
Host plants: The primary host plants for this pest are species within the Salicaceae family, specifically poplars (Populus). It can cause significant economic damage in shelterbelts, commercial poplar plantations, and urban landscaping, sometimes also affecting willow species.
Biology and life cycle: Adults overwinter in sheltered locations, such as bark crevices or beneath leaf litter. In spring, they emerge to feed on young foliage. The life cycle involves multiple generations per year, allowing the population density to increase rapidly if environmental conditions are favorable during the growing season.
Damage and pest status: Both nymphs and adults feed on plant sap by piercing the leaf epidermis. This feeding creates discolored, chlorotic patches on the leaf surface.
